Grant of IoE( Institute of Eminence) tag is the latest demand by the University Grant Commission(UGC) in their row of developments regarding the overall expansion of Indian Universities both nationally as well as internationally. The Universities which have been recommended this tag are IIT Madras, IIT Kharagpur, and Delhi University. The University of Hyderabad and Banaras Hindu University are also among the race.
There are in total 20 Institutes who have the IoE Tag. IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, and the IISc are among the list to name a few. These are already featured in top 200 in QS world ranking.
Not only for public universities, higher education regulator are also pleading to HRD( Human Resource Development) for grant of IoE tag to Private universities as well such as Shiv Nadar University (Uttar Pradesh), O.P Jindal University (Harayana), Jamia Hamdard (New Delhi), VIT Vellore, Kalinga Institute of Industrial University (Bhubaneswar) and the Satya Bharti Foundation.
Universities who have been denied the tag are :
- The Aligarh Muslim University
- The Ashoka University
- The Tezpur University
- The Krea University
- The Jadavpur University
- The Azim Premji University
- Indian Institute for Human Settlements, Bengaluru
- Indian Institute of Public Health, Gandhinagar

The (EEC) Empowered expert committee appointed by the government whose chairman is N. Gopalaswami had recommended 30 institutions for the tag but originally it was proposed for keeping in mind 20 institutes only.
In the case of private institutes, they will get special tittle as “ Deemed University”.
