Not more than two weeks since the Noida-Greater Aqua line has been inaugurated and women commuters are already troubled due to the lack of women’s only coach in the rail. Persistent women travellers were upset not to find this privilege so introduced by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation back in 2010.
Reports say that the Noida Metro Rail Corporation (NMRC) has no intention in to introduce a women’s coach at the moment,
“we don’t have any plans to introduce women-only coaches in the Aqua line metro. If the requirement is felt, we will discuss it, but at present, there are no plans.”
Further, the NMRC states than there is no notable reason for not having a women’s coach in the Noida metro.
Baffled travellers have often confused the first coach to be women’s coach but were soon taken aback to find men inside the coach. Many recommend that the NMRC should really consider reserving a coach for women soon since they feel more comfortable travelling with fellow women passengers.
Many women have also pointed out to the fact that they now have to dress accordingly to steer clear from undesirable attention. They say that the women’s coach is a space where they feel safe.
A DU student who lives in sector 55 commented,
“Introducing women-only coaches alone will not make the metro safe. To board the Aqua line metro, one has to take an auto from Noida city centre and that’s why it’s still not that crowded. But it’s only a matter of time till it gets overcrowded like Delhi and then there will be an increase in the number of complaints.”
