The long struggle for gaining the title of Institution of Eminence among several universities of India is finally over for five public Universities: IIT Madras, IIT Kharagpur, Banaras Hindu University, University of Delhi and the University of Hyderabad. This title was granted by the Ministry of Human Resources (MHRD) on Thursday.
The permission of allotting IoE tag was passed in a rendezvous by MHRD on the advice of University Grants Commission. Furthermore, the LoI (Letter of Intent) is passed to five private Universities in order to give them time for preparation of receiving the title of IoE.
These private Universities include: Amrita Vishwavidyapeetham in Tamil Nadu, Vellore Institute of Technology in Tamil Nadu Jamia Hamdard in New Delhi Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology in Odisha and Bharti Institute in Mohali.
Two state Governments received the official letter, UP and Haryana so that legislation could be put forward in the assembly in order to alter the status of two of its Universities- OP Jindal University and Shiv Nadar University from private to deemed university.
There were six pioneer institutions which were granted the IoE tag in the first round of its implementation. What’s more, two universities such as Jadavpur University (West Bengal) and Anna University (Tamil Nadu) were chosen by the State Government as well as the Empowered Committee to specify their commitment targeting their benefaction under the IoE scheme.
The IoE tagged university will get autonomy on multifarious prospects in order to accomplish their goals. The Universities will additionally be provided with monetary aid of around 1000 crore for achieving the desired growth objectives for the Universities.
The Universities with IoE tag will be exempted from the norms of the UGC (University Grant Commission) as well as freedom for framing their own course structure.
