On Monday, an announcement was made by St. Stephen’s College which stated that this year, its panel for interviewing the students seeking admission in undergraduate courses, will include one member of the college’s Supreme Council, which consists of six members of the Church of North India.

The move has been criticized by the teacher representatives in the college’s Governing Body. The Council is meant for controlling the religious and moral conduct of the students of the college. The college constitution states that, “the council shall have no control over the administration of the college”.

The teachers were informed about the decision on Tuesday when the principal of St. Stephen’s College made the announcement in a Staff Council meeting. Almost all the permanent teachers protested against it.

Also ABVP stood against the decision and said that the interference of the Supreme Council of St. Stephen’s College in the Admission Committee will not be accepted.

ABVP stated that “The decision of including Fathers from Church (Members of supreme counsel) to admission committee is arbitrary and condemnable. This would weaken the secular fabric of the university. This is not only against the constitution of the college but also against the principles laid down in India’s constitution. If the decision is not withdrawn, the Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad would be forced to mobilize large student community to raise voice against this autocratic decision”.
