What if you went to college, one day, and found busts of eminent personalities put up? You’d be surprised beyond your wits, right? Well, that is what happened to the students as well as administration of the Arts Faculty of the Delhi University.
It was a usual college day on the 20th of August, when the denizens of the art faculty were greeted by a tent. Since events are the run of the mill for the Delhi University, people presumed that the tent had been put up for hosting some programme. Little did they know that they were in for a surprise.
Later that day, the same people ran into another surprise which was in the form of three busts. The busts were of Subhas Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh and Veer Savarkar. Each of these personalities has played a crucial role in India’s struggle for freedom.
Once people were able to get over their surprise at seeing the three busts, they immediately got down to identify them. While some people were able to easily recognise Netaji’s and Bhagat Singh’s busts, they had to put on their thinking caps to identify the third. A Punjabi Honours student, named Parmeet, had to turn to Google to identify the third bust of the trifecta after identifying Netaji and Bhagat Singh.
Those who could correctly identify all the three personalities were confused regarding the connection between the three. An MA Hindi student, named Anil, was shocked to see the three together. According to him, the three didn’t match.
The three, mysteriously put-up, busts received mixed reactions from the students. Some applauded this initiative, justifying it as a tribute to these freedom fighters who played a pivotal role in our country’s history. While others clamored over the illegal nature of the installation of the busts.
NSUI has protested against the installation of these busts. On 22nd August, Akshay Lakra, the president of NSUI, expressed NSUI’s disappointment towards the installation of the busts by blackening Veer Savarkar’s bust and garlanding it with footwear. However, the busts of Shaheed Bhagat Singh and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose were garlanded with flowers.
With regard to the establishment of statues of freedom fighters outside the Art Faculty by DUSU , ABVP is of the clear view that the busts should be installed in Delhi University campus only with the permission of the Delhi University Administration and other concerned authorities. The Delhi University Students’ Union had been demanding for a long time for the installation of busts and the administration completely ignored the same demand of the student union. ABVP has clarified to the Delhi University Students’ Union that the busts should be kept in the DUSU office till the permission is granted and the Busts should be installed only after the due permission of the administration, said Siddharth Yadav, State Sceretary, ABVP Delhi.
The latest development in the busts installation row is Shiv Sena Chief, Uddhav Thackeray’s statement made on 23rd August. According to Uddhav Thackeray, “Those who do not respect Veer Savarkar should be thrashed publicly in Chowks”.
